Brian Williams, acting as the Plaintiff and Relator, as well as the States of California and
Illinois, reached settlement agreements with Defendants Safelite Group, Inc., Safelite Solutions
LLC, and Safelite Fulfillment, Inc. (collectively, “Safelite” or the “Defendants”). The settlements (California and Illinois) reflect the following terms:

  • Brian Williams, a resident of Ohio, is a former employee of Safelite Group, Inc. He is
    represented by Mark Molumphy, Tyson Redenbarger and Gia Jung from Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy, LLP.
  • Safelite, based in Columbus, Ohio, provides vehicle glass repair and replacement services, as
    well as insurance claims management services.
  • On January 5, 2023, Williams filed a whistleblower qui tam action in the Superior Court of San
    Mateo County captioned California, ex rel. Brian Williams v. Safelite Group, Inc., et al., Case No.
    23-CIV-00025, alleging claims for violations of the Insurance Frauds Prevention Act (“IFPA”),
    California Insurance Code section 1871.7.
  • On January 19, 2023, Relator filed a qui tam action in the Chancery Division of the Circuit
    Court of Cook County, Illinois captioned Illinois, ex rel. Brian Williams v. Safelite Group, Inc.,
    et al., Case No. 2023-CH-00537, alleging claims for violations of the Illinois Insurance Claims
    Fraud Prevention Act (“ICFPA”), codified at 740 ILCS 92/1 et seq.
  • Williams alleged that Safelite violated California and Illinois insurance fraud statutes
    relating to billing for windshield molding parts and vehicle cleaning services provided during
    COVID-19. Copies of the complaints are attached.
  • The States of California and Illinois declined intervention in the action, and Williams pursued
    the action.
  • In the settlement agreements, Defendants agreed to pay a total of $31 million. The amount
    includes $22,320,000 in settlement of the California action and $8,680,000 in settlement of the
    Illinois action. Copies of the settlement agreements are attached.
