On April 24, 2026, Google implemented a new RTB Control that for the first time allows users to limit how their personal information is used and to limit tracking of their Internet browsing through targeted ads.  Every Gmail user in the United States received an email with a link to the new RTB Control. On March 26, 2026, the District Court approved a historic settlement to protect the privacy rights of hundreds of millions of Google Account holders across the United States. CPM along with Pritzker-Levine and other co-counsel filed this lawsuit five years ago, alleging that Google sells personal information, including browsing history, in Real Time Bidding auctions for targeted ads billions of times every day, and that Google does this despite its express promise that “Google does not sell your personal information to anyone.” Real Time Bidding has been described as the biggest data breach the world has ever seen, resulting in detailed profiles on the interests and browsing habits of internet users. Under the Settlement, Google has provided a new RTB Control to allow all Google Accountholders in the U.S. to limit the tracking of their personal data that is sent out by Google in real time bid requests for targeted advertising on websites across the Internet.  Google has also provided enhanced disclosures of the information that is shared, providing class members with both transparency and control over how their personal information is used. The case is being handled at CPM by Brian Danitz, Nanci Nishimura and Karin Swope and team.
