CPM is Investigating TikTok for Possible Violations of Federal Law in the Collection of Information About Children

The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are suing TikTok over allegations that TikTok has violated federal law by knowingly collecting and using or sharing personal information from underage children (younger than 13) without informed consent from a parent or guardian.

Corporations should not be profiting from tracking children and collecting their private information and parents should not have to add this threat to the long list of things they need to watch for to protect their kids.

If your child created a TikTok account before they were 13 years old, you may be entitled to damages in a lawsuit against TikTok.

The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) prohibits companies from knowingly collecting, using, or disclosing personal information obtained from children younger than 13 without informed consent from a parent or guardian. If your child signed up for TikTok before they were 13 years of age, you may be entitled to participate in this lawsuit and you may be entitled to damages.

TikTok knows it should not be collecting personal information from children under the age of 13, but it has done so anyway. Authorities allege that TikTok uses children’s personal data to track and profile them. Through this illegal tracking and profiling, TikTok can deliver potentially harmful and inappropriate content.  TikTok generates millions of dollars in revenue from advertising which it targets specifically at children.
