Matthew K. Edling

Matthew K. Edling is a principal at Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy, where he focuses on financial litigation, intellectual property, business disputes, and environmental law. Mr. Edling's practice also includes counsel related to voting rights and election law.

Mr. Edling's experience includes jury trials, bench trials, arbitrations before private neutrals and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), as well as appellate briefing and argument. Recently, Mr. Edling's trial practice has focused on trade secret litigation on behalf of individuals and companies as well as financial disputes before FINRA. Mr. Edling's most recent appellate victory affirmed an individual's right to a jury trial in lieu of mandatory arbitration.

In 2009 and 2010, Mr. Edling was named a Northern California Super Lawyers Rising Star. Less than 2.5 percent of the lawyers practicing in the state are selected for this recognition. In 2010, Mr. Edling was selected as a finalist for the 2010 Street Fighter of the Year Award by the Consumer Attorneys of California, for his work on behalf of an elderly investor placed into unsuitable investments. Mr. Edling’s article “The Evidentiary Hurdles of Arbitration” was recently published by the American Bar Association. (Proof, Vol. 18 No. 4, Summer 2010).

Mr. Edling received his B.A. from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of Law. While at Cal Poly, he received the school's highest academic honor, the Academic Excellence Award. During law school, he was a member of the Hastings Law and Policy Review and the Civil Justice Clinic, and was awarded the Best Brief and Best Oral Argument in Hastings' Moot Court Program.

Mr. Edling is a member of the San Mateo County Bar Association, Consumer Attorneys of California, San Mateo County Trial Lawyers Association, Cal Poly's College of Liberal Arts Advisory Board, and a Board Director of his neighborhood planning council.
